Malcolm Rewa, a New Zealand outlaw biker—sergeant at arms (enforcer)—was a “bad man” among bad men. In 1998, he was sentenced to 22 years in prison for 24 rapes out of the 27 of which he was accused. One of his victims died during the brutal rape, which added 14 years to his sentence. In a bizarre twist, Rewa was convicted of raping the woman but not murdering her. A 17-year-old prospect for another OMC/G, for some reason, confessed to the murder two years after it was committed and spent 21 years in prison before being released and exonerated. Rewa’s life history reads like a fiction horror story.

Rewa, who was convicted of stealing a woman’s underwear when he was only nine, continued in a pattern of burglaries until he joined the army at 21, a stint that lasted only 18 months before he was discharged and committed his first known rape attempt (Crime.co.nz, n.d.). His wife at the time was in labor, and he broke into the home of a nurse at the hospital where his wife was being attended to and tried to rape her. He left behind incriminating evidence that led to his identification and capture. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 4.5 years in prison. The police speculate that his easy identification, arrest, and conviction led to extreme efforts to conceal his crimes thereafter. His final rape arrest was almost a decade later.

Rewa’s rapes and attempts to sexual assault victims were known by his biker colleagues, and they continued after he joined the Highway 61 MC. In fact, his outlaw biker gang affiliation expanded his pool of vulnerable victims in the saloon society milieu. Rewa was a true sexual predator. His rapes were often not opportunistic, but instead he “hunted” and selected many of his victims. Although his victims ranged in age from 15 to 43, the majority of his known and suspected victims were attractive, young, single professionals who lived alone; not once was there a man in the house (Crime.co.nz, n.d.). He also chose some of his victims from women he or his wife knew; he wore a variety of disguises during these acquaintance assaults. All the victims noted that he had a small penis and had difficulty sustaining an erection. His erectile dysfunction frustration appear to have caused him to become more violent as erection problems continued during the assaults. One victim was beaten with a baseball bat. Sexual assault investigators report (based on personal experience and formal and informal interviews with working and retired police officers) that failure to get and sustain an erection and becoming violent are common among rapists and other sexual assaulters.

Although random selection of victims did not fit his typical pattern, the sexual assault that ended his reign of terror was opportunistic. A 15-year-old girl was walking her dog when Rewa attempted to abduct her and pull her into his vehicle. The young girl fought back and was severely assaulted, resulting in a broken nose, black eyes, and the need for metal plates to be inserted in her jaw.
